Vernon Estes is 96. It’s time to give the Teacher a ride to orbit.
On January 4, 2026, Vernon Estes—the founder of Estes Industries—celebrated his 96th birthday. For over six decades, Vern didn't just sell model rockets; he provided the "Day Zero" engineering education for the entire modern aerospace workforce.
Almost every engineer currently welding Starships, calculating trajectories for NASA, or operating Electron launches started their journey with a $10 Estes kit. Whether it was the iconic Alpha, the towering Big Bertha, or the sleek Interceptor, Vern’s work ignited the spark that is currently taking humanity to the Moon and Mars.
We are a grassroots movement calling on the titans of the New Space age to honor the man who started it all. We are asking for a Legacy Designation—his name on a vehicle that actually touches the sky.
Beyond the motors, Vern was an innovator in data. In 1968, the Estes Camroc was teaching kids about aerial photography and stereoscopic (3D) imagery decades before it was industry standard. As a tribute to Vern’s 3D legacy, this site will soon host a stereo-gallery of the kits that built the future.
